( Yellow Bird ) was born prior to the arrival of Lewis and Clark. He became head chief of the Walla Walla's, as well as a leader among all inland tribes. At the 1855 Treaty Council, he opposed the reservation policy and won a separate reservation for the Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla's. He was later killed, scalped, and mutilated by Oregon Volunteers during the Battle of Walla Walla, while negotiating for his people under a flag of truce.
The commemoration of this great chief and the Native American heritage of the Walla Walla Valley is long past due. This statue was unveiled during the sesquicentennial observance (June 9 - 10 and 11, 2005) of the Stevens Treaty Council, in Walla Walla Washington.
