Jonathan
Skinny Wainwright was born at Fort Walla Walla during the cavalry
era, within the present VA medical center grounds. He is
a hero of the desperate struggle for Bataan and Corregidor, a prisoner of war with his men for three
years, including the infamous Bataan Death March.
Wainwright retired from the military in 1947. He died in
1953. The statue shows the General saluting all Veterans
that have fought and sacrificed for this countries
freedom. In his left hand he carries a cane that was
given to him by General Douglas MacArthur upon
Wainwright's return from the prison camps. The
larger-than-life monument was unveiled at the VA Hospital
in Walla Walla, Washington on Veteran's Day, November 11,
1996 and the Hospital's name was officially changed to
the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veteran's Affairs
Medical Center! Learn more about General Wainwright here - http://www.amvets-wallawalla.org/Wainwright_Pages/wainwrightenter.htm
